ConocoPhillips Donates to Support Two Environmental Education Projects in China
BEIJING, June 27, 2017—ConocoPhillips China (COPC) today announced the renewal of its partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute China (JGI China) through a donation of RMB 838,500 (approx. USD121,600) to sponsor two environmental education projects in China. The Clear Water Project and the Migrant Children Environmental Education Project are receiving COPC funding to build upon the long-standing relationship between COPC and JGI China in order to expand the scope of these projects to reach more young people in China.
The Clear Water Project’s goal is to increase young people’s understanding of the important ecological role of wetlands in China and to encourage wetlands conservation. First initiated in 2013, the project has touched more than 7,700 students, parents, teachers, and volunteers in approximately 200 schools throughout 15 provinces in China.
The Migrant Children Environmental Education Project aims to equip students at migrant schools with a general understanding of environmental protection measures through environment-related curricula. Many migrant schools lack a science component due to constrained resources, but through the project 10 migrant schools in Beijing and more than 7,000 students have been impacted and 160 teachers have been trained in the curriculum. The project has helped establish awareness of environmental causes, and the 2017 funding will expand to migrant schools and communities beyond the Beijing area.
“ConocoPhillips is very excited to extend our partnership with JGI China on these two important initiatives,” said Mark Wheeler, president of ConocoPhillips China. “We are encouraged by the impact the initiatives have had on behavior and attitudes over the past four years and we’re keen to build on this momentum. We strongly believe that educating young people is the key to meaningful, long-term change. ConocoPhillips globally has a long history of supporting sustainable development and addressing key concerns in local communities. We look forward to working with JGI China to further strengthen the environmental education in China.”
Michael Crook, co-chairman of the Jane Goodall Institute China, added: “For more than 20 years, we've been committed to encouraging young people to care for the environment, animals and the community, as well as empowering them to discover environmental issues and take actions to solve environmental problems. There is no doubt that environmental education is a big issue at present and vital for the future. We are encouraged to see that our programs are getting socially responsible partners, like ConocoPhillips China, involved by supporting two projects that empower young people to take informed and compassionate action to make the world a better place.”
