ConocoPhillips China donates RMB500,000 (US $71,500) for Children’s Congenital Heart Disease Surgery
Beijing, April 29, 2008 —ConocoPhillips China Inc (COPC), a subsidiary of ConocoPhillips Inc [NYSE: COP], announced its support of the TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital, Tianjin by providing a RMB500,000 ($71,500) award to the Hospital’s Love & Hope Project. ConocoPhillips commitment to support the communities where it operates will allow surgery to be offered for fifty children from disadvantaged families who suffer from congenital heart disease.
The Love & Hope Project was developed by the China Association of Social Workers (CASW) and TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital of Tianjin to fund heart surgery for to 2-14 year-old children who are born with a heart condition or who are suffering from heart disease. All the children selected to benefit from this program are from either orphans or from poverty-stricken families. Each selected child will be awarded RMB10, 000 ($1,500) to fund their heart surgery.
Congenital heart disease is one of the biggest killers to new born babies in China, with more than 150,000 babies born each year with heart disease. Several of the conditions are treatable, but many of these children and their families can not normally afford the cost of treatment.
“This is an important donation from COPC as it offers us the opportunity to enhance or in some cases even save the lives of 50 deserving children.” said Mr. Georg Storaker, President of ConocoPhillips China Inc.
”At ConocoPhillips, we believe that our ability to grow depends not only on our business successes, but also on our commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen, and to providing the opportunity to improve the quality of life of the communities where we operate.” Storaker added, “The Love and Hope Project has been very successful in protecting and saving lives of deserving Chinese children. Given COPC’s significant business interests in Bohai Bay it is good that we can support a local hospital’s tremendous efforts.”
The Love & Hope Project covers all areas of China, and any child suffering from heart disease can apply for surgery from the TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital. Since May 2007, 41 children have benefited from this project and ConocoPhillips’ contribution will take this number to nearly 100.
“The donation by COPC will significantly help disadvantaged children,” said Mr. Liu Xiaocheng, President of TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital. ”With the great support from COPC and other partners, we hope that we can save as many children in need as we can” added Liu.
In addition to the donation, COPC supports an employee volunteer program at the TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital, through which ConocoPhillips international and Chinese employees offer help and support to children receiving treatment at the hospital. Storaker explained, ‘This is an important part of our company’s philosophy to foster volunteerism and encourage employees to support the communities in which we do business.”
