ConocoPhillips China’s Congenital Heart Disease Projects Listed in the 2022 China Charity Ranking

BEIJING - ConocoPhillips China (COPC) was awarded “Best Annual Charity Project” on May 30 in the 2022 China Charity Ranking for a series of public welfare efforts in supporting children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and training medical staff to perform the treatments.

CHD is the world’s most common birth defect and is the leading cause of child mortality in China today. Determined to support children with CHD, COPC joined together with the TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital (TICH) in 2008 to launch the Heart for Heart project. The project provides financial support for babies and children under the age of 14 from low-income families. To date, COPC has invested more than RMB 12 million to help over 590 children with CHD to return to good health with the aid of high-quality medical care from TICH. COPC also provides travel expenses for a family member to travel with the child so they can be there during the treatment and recovery. The impact of the program covers 16 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions across China.

Over the last 10 years through Heart for Heart, COPC has witnessed first-hand how the positive impact of early screening and diagnosis of CHD can significantly improve treatment efficacy. The early screening of CHD in children, especially in remote areas, needs urgent social attention and support. In 2017, COPC donated an additional RMB 350,000 to TICH to purchase an inter-provincial medical screening van to improve the accessibility of CHD screening nationwide. The van has travelled over 28,000 kilometers across China, including to Gansu, Qinghai and other remote and high-altitude areas. In 2022, to help more children and their families, COPC joined hands with TEDA Charity Association to maximize the use of charity funds, increase support for CHD screening at TICH and improve treatment for children in remote areas through early detection and diagnosis.

COPC is committed to ensuring that its efforts today are long-lasting. Over the past nine years, COPC has invested resources to improve the healthcare capabilities of domestic medical institutions through another project called Creating Hopes for Heart. This sister project funds three top CHD treatment medical institutions located in western, eastern, and northern China. Through these donations, West China Hospital, Qingdao Women and Children’s Hospital and TICH have successfully established a comprehensive pediatric treatment center for CHD. The three hospitals are also able to introduce overseas medical resources, conduct overseas exchanges and invite international experts to provide valuable on-site guidance to improve treatment and medical research practices. Since launching in 2013, COPC has donated more than RMB 6 million to the project. Through the combined efforts of all involved, 1,496 healthcare workers have benefited directly from the program funding and have gone on to treat 9,648 children.

“Children are the hope of our future. We are proud to be able to help children with CHD, support them to have a better life and strengthen the capacity of medical staff through COPC’s charity projects,” said Mr. Bill Arnold, President of ConocoPhillips China. “2022 marks the 25th anniversary of COPC’s commitment to corporate social responsibility in China. Being shortlisted for the Best Annual Charity Project Award is a testament to COPC’s public welfare practices.”

In addition to making positive contributions to the health of Chinese families, COPC is also dedicated to overcoming key challenges in education, rural revitalization, environmental protection, and disaster relief. COPC has launched a series of charity projects to support youth development, promote ecological conservation and overcome biodiversity issues. Over the past 25 years, COPC has invested more than RMB 78 million in corporate social responsibility activities that have benefited thousands of families across China.

COPC also actively encourages its employees to participate in volunteering and philanthropic opportunities. For more than 25 years, COPC employees have taken on a range of roles to give back to their local communities, including becoming volunteers for the Badaling International Friendship Forest eco-Education workshops, teaching English for the Light and Love School and acting as student mentors for the FUTURE Energy Innovation Research Project. COPC’s emphasis on volunteerism offers employees an avenue to make a positive difference and has raised awareness of the importance and value of social responsibility throughout the company. In the face of major natural disasters and community emergencies, COPC’s employees have made generous charitable donations that have been matched by COPC, with a total of RMB 8,500,000 raised to support people across China in need.

As a longstanding and committed partner beginning in the 1980s, COPC is among the largest foreign investors in China’s upstream oil and gas sector and is devoted to creating lasting values for local communities while responsibly developing energy. COPC knows that this responsibility is of great significance and looks forward to continuing the support for important public welfare programs such as these and the many other programs that help the communities in which they do business in.
