Qingdao, China – On Aug. 7, 2024, the “ConocoPhillips Cup” Industry Track of the 17th National University Student Social Practice and Science Contest on Energy Saving and Emission Reduction was successfully concluded in Qingdao. As an integral part of the nationwide contest, the event was organized by the New Energy Institute of China University of Petroleum (East China) under the guidance of the Contest Committee Secretariat and sponsored by ConocoPhillips China Inc. (COPC). This challenge track, themed “Integrated Development Towards a Low Carbon Future,” aims to foster innovative ideas and projects addressing energy saving, emission reduction, and low-carbon development, while nurturing the next generation of leaders in these sectors. Following a rigorous three-month evaluation process, research teams from China University of Petroleum (East China) and Chongqing Jiaotong University stood out among 675 participating teams and won the Platinum awards.

Launched in May 2024, the Industry Track has attracted widespread participation with 3,678 students across 136 universities. The total 675 submissions included research papers, models, and software focused on cutting-edge solutions in emission reduction and low-carbon development in the energy industry; integrated development of traditional energy industry and new energy resources; Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS)/Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology and the production, transportation and application of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
“This year, we specially introduced and designed the "ConocoPhillips Cup" Industry Track under the national contest, aiming to inspire students to address the challenge of low-carbon development while integrating commercial applicability and viability into their solutions,” said Gong Liang, Deputy Dean and Professor of China University of Petroleum (East China) New Energy Institute. “We thank ConocoPhillips China for their generous support in bringing in the extensive resources and expertise while building the bridge between academia and industry.”
Markel Hübinette, President of ConocoPhillips China, delivered remarks at the Award Ceremony of the 17th National University Student Social Practice and Science Contest on Energy Saving and Emission Reduction
“Today, we are at a crucial moment of energy transition as low-carbon development becomes an increasingly important focus around the globe. With a net-zero ambition for operational GHG emissions (Scope 1 and 2 emissions) by 2050, ConocoPhillips seeks mutually beneficial outcomes in support of China’s “dual-carbon” goals by working closely with Chinese partners to decarbonize our existing offshore oil and gas operations, increase LNG supply as a cleaner transition fuel, and explore more low carbon energy opportunities,” said Markel Hübinette, President of ConocoPhillips China. “While our experienced engineers are evaluating potential solutions, we also believe our young generations will be the mainstay as we work towards a lower carbon future. ConocoPhillips hopes to ignite their creativity and hone their skillsets by creating a platform like this Industry Track.”
A judge panel consisting of industry experts, scholars, and company representatives, evaluated the entries based on originality, innovation, technology, applicability, and environmental sustainability.
Following months of review and evaluation, 25 teams were shortlisted for the final round of competition to share their research findings onsite. These finalists were able to showcase their innovative energy solutions through presentations, roadshows, and discussion to the judges. After two days of deliberations, “Shanhai Hydrogen Heart-Distributed On-line Hydrogen Fuel Cell System Design Specification” research team from China University of Petroleum (East China) and “Design specification of high altitude offshore wind energy utilization system based on BP-PID intelligent algorithm” research team from Chongqing Jiaotong University emerged as the Platinum award winners. In addition, eight teams were honored with Gold awards, 15 teams received Silver awards, and 30 teams received Bronze awards.
“I am deeply impressed by the creativity, technical expertise, and forward-looking mindset demonstrated by our young generation. These, in turn, reinforce our commitment to youth empowerment and talent cultivation,” Hübinette said. “For decades, ConocoPhillips has demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility by supporting impactful programs that address critical community needs and create lasting value. We are glad to collaborate with China University of Petroleum (East China) to fortify our efforts in the education area.”
The final competition also featured knowledge-sharing workshops and receptions, which provided valuable networking opportunities between students, academic professionals, and corporate executives.
