Commitment to the Bohai Sea

ConocoPhillips played a major role in discovering and developing the Penglai oilfield in the Bohai Sea in the late 1990s and, working cooperatively with our co-venturer China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), we have been active in the sea for over 20 years.

During this time, we have produced and supplied vital power to spur China’s economic growth. It has also given us the opportunity to apply advanced technologies and share best practices with our valued Chinese co-venturer. These include the design and construction of one of the world’s largest floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, implementation of globally recognized standards of health, safety and environment (HSE) management and the introduction of a zero-discharge practice at the Penglai field.

Our presence in the Bohai Sea area has always been based on a commitment to safeguard the environment and surrounding communities. We have made longstanding efforts to foster a healthy Bohai ecology by improving fishery resources, protecting the marine environment, conserving wetlands, and managing risk in the Bohai Sea area. Moreover, we have taken our commitment to local communities well beyond our core operations, engaging in a variety of projects such as supporting severely underprivileged and homeless children at the Light & Love School in Beijing, and participating in environmental and health initiatives in the Bohai rim.

Our work in the Bohai Sea area has not been without its challenges, but our goal is to create lasting value for the countries and communities in which we operate.  In the years ahead, we look forward to continuing to work with China’s national energy companies, government and other stakeholders.

We are confident we can advance projects that will continue to help China provide its people and industries with clean and sustainable energy.
